Sean Monroy grew up in Brooklyn, New York in the 1980's during a significant era for the arts. He grew up surrounded by a mecca of culture during a time when hip hop was gaining momentum and comic books were at their peak of popularity. He recalls spending many hours escaping into the story lines of the DC and Marvel Universe while exploring never before heard expressions of rap. At the early age of seven, he began creating a comic book universe that became the foundation of a career and passion at the same time.
In addition to growing up in New York, Sean has spent time living overseas. During his teen years he experienced foreign culture, education and the reality of foreign relations first hand when he lived in Honduras with his family for 2 years; and more recently spent time living in Bangkok while traveling throughout Southeast Asia. These experiences are a big inspiration, have influenced his outlook on the world, and are often reflected in his work.
Now living on the West Coast, Sean finds that both East and West Coast life experiences have contributed to his broad range of styles. He has evolved an edgy, Noir visual technique. Sean would consider his artistic influences to include Jack Kirby, Arthur Adams, and most of all, his father, Bert Monroy, one of the foremost digital hyper-realist artists working today.
